Could you and your spouse pass a Stokes interview?

On Behalf of | Mar 28, 2022 | Immigration

In a recent post, we discussed ways you can prepare for your immigration interview. Today’s post will get a bit more granular regarding some of the questions you and your spouse might have to answer in a Stokes interview.

These interviews are designed to trip up immigrants who engage in sham marriages for the purpose of getting a green card and establishing permanent residency status. Failing your Stokes interview could jeopardize your right to legally remain in the United States. Below are some common questions you can expect to be asked.

Questions focus on domestic life

If two people are actually living together in a relationship, these are a few questions they would likely be able to answer:

  • What does the couch in your living room look like?
  • Where did you buy your furniture?
  • What company provides your internet and cable service?
  • How many TVs are in your home?
  • What is the number of bedrooms in your family home?
  • Which day does your trash get picked up?
  • Who cleans your house?
  • What did you eat for breakfast today?
  • Do you have any pets?

They ask questions about your relationship

Real couples will have the same answers when asked questions about their relationships. Be ready to respond to questions like:

  • Where did you go on your first date?
  • How did the two of you meet?
  • Which side of the bed do you sleep on?
  • What is your spouse’s favorite meal?
  • Where do the two of you like to go out to eat?
  • What kind of birth control are you using?
  • What kind of toothpaste do you use?

As you can see from the above real-life examples, these questions can get quite personal, even invasive. But they are all a part of the process of determining your legal immigration status so you can continue to build your life here in the United States.
